One of the most welcoming sights are the beautiful front porch plants in pretty containers. Flower pot ideas are something I'm always keeping my eyes open for. You can easily DIY many of the flower pot ideas you see on porches or even at garden centers. Your front door plants can be personalized (color, size etc.) and end up being less expensive.
Best Planter for your Front Porch
This planter is a typical one I put on my porch. It uses simple, common plants and just works every time! Of course, I experiment with my porch plant ideas, but this is my tried-and-true that I come back to every year. I like accessorizing with some garden art. The container below has a rusty dragonfly!
In my opinion, the best plant is a geranium.
How to plant these front porch flowers?
Over a dozen years, that was the most frequent question I received as I shared my favorite planter. It took me a few years to figure out I should just write a post about it. If you want a little help, this is a simple post on how to plant flower pots.
If you are looking for something specific like Tall Outdoor Planters, there are 25 ideas in that article. Or maybe you are looking for some theory for designing your pots and ideas for the best annuals? I have many inspirational articles for you!
The above planter is obviously not finished, but has a good start! Let me share some of my favorite planters with you!
Creative Porch Planter using Hostas (a Perennial)
Here is a great way to keep your planters under budget! We all know that doing multiple planters gets expensive. Use perennials from your yard and repurpose a container.
The galvanized tub planter is so pretty! The post is actually a complete tutorial on how I created the finished look for this outdoor porch plant combination. When I made this one, I was broke and figured out how to put it together inexpensively.
Below is another galvanized tub that I spray painted black. It really made the porch flowers pop!
Best Plants for the Front Porch
One of the most important things to consider is how much sun your porch gets. Is it mainly in the shade, or is it in a really sunny location? Most of the plants for the front porch I'm showing are tolerant of lots of sun. Make sure to buy the right plants for the right amount of sunshine!

My Favorite Plant for Porch Flowers - Geraniums
I love geraniums, especially red geraniums! They were my Mom's favorite, and I think I inherited that love. They are beautiful enough to be the only flower in a pot. Although not on a porch, I love these simple red geranium window boxes. The idea can easily be adapted to any location.
Even just a simple planter looks great with a pretty geranium in the middle!
Colorful Flower Pot Idea
This colorful grouping of flowers is popular on Pinterest! Color can add so much interest and curb appeal to your front porch. It's the contrasting colors of the red ivy geranium (which tolerates shade better than the regular geraniums), the bright green sweet potato vine, the purple petunias, and the yellow million bells that make this such a beautiful group of potted flowers! This planter of my neighbor's was the one that started me using sweet potato vine!
I'm finished planting my porch flowers this year, but I'm so tempted to do just one more every time I see this one!
Paint your boring flower pots!
Do you feel you have to sacrifice having pretty planters because the cute ones or the big ones are expensive? Sometimes, it's a pretty container that makes all the difference! It's not hard to do, nor does it cost much, to transform a boring pot into a beautiful flower pot! It took me an afternoon to paint these two flower pots.
These two planters are beautiful even after being used outside year-round for three years. The plant combinations are from different years, but you can see I am sticking to the traditional fill, spill, and thrill formula. I LOVE my geraniums and the purple fountain grass.
In the planter above, you can see I have a solar light. I use it to brighten the area around the steps to my front porch.

Window box on Front Porch Railing
If you have a railing around your front porch, put a planter like a window box on it. It adds beauty and privacy!
Window box type planters often are forgotten as an option for plants on the front of a porch.
I just finished planting this window box on the railing of my back porch. A little color goes a long way in making the space look pretty. The geranium, petunias, and alysum will fill in and drape beautifully in a few weeks.
Front step flower pot idea
I have used this narrow but tall planter on my front steps. You do need to be careful about the container size so it doesn't block guests from walking up the stairs. I had this pot in a very shady area for a season.
One of my friends liked having urn pots going up her stairs.
These planters just made the front door pop!
Remember also that you can have areas in the front yard with container gardens to welcome people as they walk to the front door. Remember the curb appeal factor! This red bench with the simple planters on it has always been my favorite!
Red, White and Blue Porch Planter
Let me share this red, white, and blue planter, ready for a patriotic weekend! Just so you know, it's become accepted to use purple instead of blue in this theme, mainly because there aren't many truly blue flowers.
I hope you have found this collection of flowers and planters helpful! If you love getting ideas and inspiration for creative plantings, please take a look at some other articles I have on my site.
