Banana chocolate muffins - only three ingredients.

This is one of those cheater recipes that no one else needs to know about : ).  It's delicious, quick and you probably have all the ingredients at home already.

This is a really old recipe that I published years ago. People are still making it and pinning it to Pinterest - a lot!   I thought I would share this old favorite.

Yes, it's possible and they are delish. I was actually going to make my two-ingredient banana muffins but didn't have any plain cake mix. All I had in my pantry was a chocolate cake mix.

    Banana Chocolate muffins - Printable

A printable copy of the recipe is further down this post.

    What are the three ingredients:

    Chocolate cake mix.
    3-4 bananas, mashed.
    2 eggs.

Truly, these are the simplest Banana Chocolate muffins you will find!  With just a box of chocolate cake mix, 3-4 medium bananas and a couple of eggs you have a delicious chocolate banana muffin.  Believe me, you'll love them.  They look, smell and taste great!

**This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my full disclosure policy for details.**

How do you make these three-ingredient banana chocolate muffins?

    1. Mash bananas.  Bananas that are a little overripe are best!  I often make these muffins when my bananas didn't get eaten as fast as I anticipated.

Mash those bananas for your three ingredient chocolate muffins!

    Mash those bananas!

    2. Add cake mix.  Just the cake mix.  Do NOT add the other ingredients that are listed on the box.  I get asked this often.

Adding cake mix to mashed bananas

    Add cake mix

    3. Add eggs. I just gently drop them on the mix and use a fork to beat them before incorporating them into the rest of the mix ingredients. Why dirty another dish!

Mixing bananas, chocolate cake mix and now eggs to the three ingredient chocolate banana muffin batter.

Bananas, chocolate cake mix and now eggs.

    4. Mix then place in 12 well muffin tin.  I use muffin/cupcake liners to keep my muffin tins clean.  I do what I can to avoid any extra dishes that I have to wash.

Mix everything together. It will be lumpy because of the mashed bananas.

A huge tip that makes cleaning up a lot easier.  I've started using scoops for a lot of my prep. work.  For this recipe, I scoop the muffin dough.  It makes sure each muffin well gets the same amount of dough and it doesn't dribble onto the pan (or the counter).  I also use them when I make my favorite meatballs and cookies!  The kinds of scoops I use look like this (click on the picture of the scoops to see more info):

    scoop

    5. Bake at 350 Fahrenheit for 16-18 minutes.

Fresh out of the oven. Oh, that chocolate and banana smell - so yummy!

Oh, these are good! The taste of bananas is definitely there, not totally overwhelmed by the chocolate. In my opinion, a perfect balance of banana and chocolate. I did add the 2 eggs to this recipe. Totally optional. But, I found it made the texture more similar to traditionally baked muffins.

Honestly, this is one of the best super easy cheating recipes!

I only had a yellow cake mix so I added Dutch cocoa to the mix and it came out relish.
      Thanks for the recipe.

Is it possible to just use bananas and chocolate cake mix and no eggs?

Wow!! So easy and so delicious! I had three bananas to use up and came across this wonderful recipe. The only thing I did different was I added one tablespoon of oil to the batter. After putting in muffin liners I added some chocolate chips and walnuts to the top. These were so moist and good. I will definitely be making these again!!

I was experimenting. You absolutely can add the eggs to the yellow if you choose!

Why are there 2 eggs added to the chocolate cake mix & banana muffin recipe but not to the yellow cake mix & banana muffins?
      I’m confused!

There is sugar in the boxed cake mix. If your daughter is fructose intolerant, this may not be a good choice for her : (.

Can you screenshot or tell me what the sugar amount is on the boxed choc cake? My daughter is fructose intolerant and can’t have much sugar. I’m searching for desserts for her. If there is any on the box then it wouldn’t work because the bananas already have sugar in them :/

I wish I could post a picture! These came out perfectly, not too banana-y or chocolatey. Juat for the heck of it I used my silicone doughnut tray at 13 minutes. First Pinterest success (: thank you!

Yes, it should. I would just follow the baking time the box states if made in a loaf pan.

      Hi Tracy!
All you should have used for this recipe was chocolate cake mix, bananas, and eggs. Did you add the other ingredients that were on the box - there was no need to.

      January 23, 2019 at 8:51 pm

Hi! The recipe states 3 to 4 bananas. You needed just a couple more bananas. However, I think it should have turned out OK with you adding some water.

I'm using a carrot cake mix b/c its allI have. Used 2 eggs and 2 bananas. It seems really thick. I added a tad of water just to get it all to blend together. Should I add something else?

I made these tonight and calculated mine to come out to about 100 calories per muffin-I made 21 muffins and used unsweetened applesauce instead of oil. Tested pretty good not baked assuming the same for baked!

I am swirling in peanut butter to the first batch and coconut to the second. I always add coconut to my banana bread muffins. There are so many possibilities!

I used Ghirardelli dark chocolate cake mix..there are mini dark chocolate chips already in the mix. Also I added an extra egg for protein. They took 20 min. to bake in my oven. Yummy!!

I made this today!! Only thing I added was abt a 1/2 cup of natural peanut butter & a splash of water. I baked in a loaf pan at 350 for 40 min, tested it, then abt another 5 min. It was awesome!! Ate some while still warm and could taste all the flavors!

Can you freeze these muffins for later use?

    36. momcrieff

      May 14, 2016 at 8:35 am

Absolutely! I have made it with yellow cake mix. It can taste a little bland but if you add a little cinnamon, that takes care of that!

    37. momcrieff

      May 14, 2016 at 8:28 am

Make sure to use older (more mushy) bananas. Then, I've found the consistency is good. However, consistency can be a very subjective thing. Even with your changes, this is still and easy recipe. I hope you enjoyed your muffins!

    40. Natasha

      May 07, 2016 at 2:24 pm

I made these today and found that 2 eggs made the consistency completely wrong. I ended up using 3 eggs and fourth a cup of oil to make the muffins.

I just input the recipe to weight watcher.com with their new smart points system and a 3/4 filled large muffin pan is about 5 points per muffin and that's pretty darn good if I say so. I credited you in the recipe description. 🙂

      January 15, 2016 at 9:09 am

Yes you can do this in a loaf pan. I haven't so am not exactly sure what the length of time would be in the oven. It will be much longer than muffins though (that's why I like making the muffins).

to get the nutrition facts per mffun - 1) look at the cake mix. 2) add the nutritional foot print of 3 bananas / 12 , and 2 eggs / 12 to whatever the cake mix says and there you have it. BTW this is not technically 3 ingredients - the cake mix alone has about 20 or so....
