When you are having a craving for cherry pie, cherry cobbler with cake mix is the quickest and easiest way to satisfy this craving.  This recipe requires only three ingredients and you may already have these at home.

This is a three-ingredient cherry dump cake-style cobbler.  It's more delicious, easier and quicker to make than running to the grocery store!  And when do they have cherry pie when you are in the mood anyway?  The kids wanted this so I modified this three ingredient peach cobbler recipe. If you are looking for an apple style dessert with only three ingredients, try this three ingredient apple spice cake. Blueberry craving? This easy blueberry cobbler is a similar recipe using blueberries.

    Ingredients

    • Yellow cake mix.  It doesn't matter what brand.  If you don't have yellow cake mix on hand, chocolate tastes great with cherries!
    • Two cans of pie cherries (21 oz each).  That would be the larger (but not huge) can.
    • 1 stick of butter.  Salted or unsalted, it doesn't matter, either one will taste good.

Were you looking more for a from scratch cake?  Try this cherry coffee cake.  It still uses cake mix but you add more ingredients to make it more home made.

    Instructions

    I use a 9 x 13 casserole dish and think it's the perfect size.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

    Step 1

Spray your casserole dish with nonstick baking spray.

Dump the cherries into the bottom of the casserole dish.

I challenge you not to try one of these cherries!  Of course, you need to taste test : ).

    Step 2

Add the cake mix on top of the cherries.  You want an even thin layer.  Just the dry cake mix.  Do NOT use the other ingredients listed on the box.

    Step 3

Slice a stick of butter into thin slices.  Actually, thinner than what I'm showing.  My butter was a little too warm to get thin slices.  The more slices you have, the better your topping is!

Bake approximately 35 minutes in the oven until the topping is golden brown.  There are usually spots where the cherry filling bubbles up.

Look at the end result below!  Yummm.    I will confess that because I didn't cut enough slices, there were a couple of dry spots.   I gave the top a quick spray with no-stick spray and it made everything nice and brown and yummy looking. See FAQ tip further down.

Here's the finished dessert!  It tastes sooooo good!   If you like cherry pie, this is the easiest way to get all the taste and flavor or cherry pie but no fuss.   I've never been good at making pie crust.  This is so much easier and just as tasty!  Of course, a little scoop of ice cream adds to the deliciousness!

    FAQ's

If there are some cake mix dry spots what can I do?

Spray some baking or cooking spray on the dry spots. Bake an additional 5 minutes.

I don't have yellow cake mix. What can I substitute?

Chocolate cake mix and pie cherries taste amazing together. You'll love the flavor!

The cake mix box says to add other ingredients.

To make this recipe you don't add them. You use the dry cake mix straight from the box. Honest. It might look funny but it turns out great.

Three Ingredient Cherry Cobbler with Cake Mix

For all the flavor of cherry pie, with a fraction of the work, this is the recipe!  Only 3 ingredients and about 35 minutes in the oven, you have a delicious, quick and inexpensive dessert.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cans cherry pie filling 21 oz each pie cherries
    • 1 box yellow cake mix
    • 1 stick butter salted or unsalted

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Spray 9 x 13 casserole dish with no-stick spray.
    • Dump two cans of canned cherries into casserole dish.
    • Spread cake mix evenly over the cherries.  You are using the dry cake mix with no additional ingredients.
    • Thinly slice one stick of butter.  The more slices, the better!   Spread them on top of the cake mix.
    • DO NOT STIR.
    • Bake for 30-40 minutes.  Watch for the color to be a delicious golden color.
    • If you notice at 30 minutes that there is dry, cake mix, take it out of the oven and spray a bit of non-stick spray on the dry parts.  Put it back in the oven for a few minutes (3 to 5 minutes).

    Notes

If you slice the butter thin enough, you should not have any dry cake mix once this is baked.  If you do, spray a little baking or cooking spray on the dry spots and bake for 5 more minutes.
A scoop of vanilla ice cream is always delicious on any baked good!

Here's how I make mine, pretty similar but a little different.

      Ingredients:
      1 box white cake mix
1 or 2 cans cherry pie filling
      one stick of butter

      optional:
      chopped walnuts to taste
      cinnamon to taste

Add: nuts and cinnamon to dry mix, if you want.
      1. Melt butter in a separate bowl and using a knife or fork, slowly pour melted butter and cut into dry cake mix so that you have little chunks.
      2. Put cherry filling into a glass dish, I also add cinnamon into the cherry filling.
      3. Sprinkle butter, cinnamon and walnut infused cake mix over top of cherries and bake at 350 for approximately 45 minutes.
I always put the dish on some type of baking pan or foil in case of drip over.

Just made this recipe and it was very good. So simple. I added 1/2 t. of cinnamon and 1/4 t. of nutmeg to the cake mix.
