My husband suggested I take over our dining room as my blog office & command central location. I had an office upstairs in the furthest part of the house. It was great in so many ways but had several drawbacks. I had to run to answer the door, the decor was IKEA from about 12 years ago, I certainly couldn't cook while I worked up there (no stirring my spaghetti sauce or watching timing of my baking) 'cause it just wasn't near where I did everything.
Dining Room - Before Repurposing into My Office
Here is a picture of my room as a dining room.
Don't get me wrong. I didn't have anything against my dining room. I actually liked my dining room. But it has looked like this since we moved in (8 years ago). Then, about 5 years ago, we bought a big kitchen table (seats 10ish). So, we no longer had to put the adults in the dining room and the kids in the kitchen. We were able to enjoy everyone's company.
Hiding paint swatches behind curtain panels
Soooooo, I really wanted a totally different look for my home office. For what would be my blogging base and my family's command central. Modern, fresh and inviting was the look I was going for. I started obsessing about gray paint. What better way to change a room and give my home office makeover a great start! I posted this on Facebook and had tons of feedback!
The darker color won by a landslide!! THANK YOU to everyone who helped me decide. With so many objective votes for the darker gray (many of you I didn't even know), how could I not use this
color! Oh, if you are going through the process of painting swatches on your walls, check out my suggestions on how to hide them in my blog post about hiding paint swatches.
Empty but repainted dining room
I posted a picture similar to this just a couple of days ago. Freshly painted and empty. This room was waiting for a new start. A new beginning, a new purpose!
See my kitty, Raji photobombing my shot? Yes, he has been inspecting and sniffing every change in this room. I think I can honestly say, so far my room is Raji approved!
Here are a couple pictures of my home office makeover as of bright and early this morning. My new furniture, fresh paint, but not much else. I promise I will show you everything when it's done. Thank you everyone for your encouragement and input so far!
Thank you for visiting! Here is my finished office - family command center room. Thanks for visiting. Hope you enjoyed the tour!

I love the wall unit bookcase & desk. Was this a custom build or did you purchase them? Thank you
Melissa
Wheee did you find the bookcase/desk combo?

Love the dining/office. Where did you get the two cabinets?
momcrieff
Hi! We actually had a cabinet maker create them for us. I knew what I wanted and he created my vision!
Jess
Great job!! Where did you get the furniture?

I love the new room, and love those colors. I am going to pin this so my sister can see it for her craft room. We were thinking gray would be a nice neutral color and after seeing your office, I am for sure she needs ro go with that color. Thanks so much for sharing!

I love an office. I would put some pops of color. Turquoise is a great accent with the black, white and gray. Love the table as a desk. Just remember the old decorating trick, 3, 5, or 7. Odd colors, patterns, and textures make a room more interesting. That is a professional decorators trick.
momcrieff
Thank your for the tips! I am taking my time, buying/making accents that I will LOVE! Stop by again later to see the finished room!

I had to share this with my daughter. I asked her if she was interested in our dining room set if they ended up with a formal dining room when they move back to Wisconsin. Her response - "No, we'll probably turn it into an office." What I love is that you've succeeded in transforming the room, it doesn't look like a former dining room!
Patti
Looking great! Good for you. Keep us posted on your progress!

Looks awesome Susan! What color and brand is that paint color?
momcrieff
Thanks! The gray I ended up choosing was Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray (SW 7017). The lighter color that I ended up not using was SW Mindful Gray (SW 7016). I have a feeling that during a rainy week, that lighter color may show up somewhere in my house! Love how crisp and clean the gray looks!
