Christmas Stair Garland - Easy and Safe
I've seen quite a few stairways decked out with Christmas garland artistically draped down the stair banister. I must be getting old because my first thought is that this is a safety issue. Both young children and those older folks who are a little unsteady on their feet need to be able to hold onto the banister.
A safer location for Christmas garland
I'm not saying to not put those garlands and twinkling lights on the stairs, but put them in a different spot on the stairs! There is a Christmas Fantasy house near me and they have been putting their pretty garland at the bottom of the stairs, not the banister. So that's what I've also done!
Forgive the plug being so front and center. I do end up putting a small table in front of it but I wanted you to see the garland at the bottom of the banister and I did want the lights plugged in!
Christmas Stair Garland - Easy and Safe
I remember going down beautifully decorated stairs with an unsteady toddler, telling him not to touch the stair rail. It was not an easy descent. And now, some of my older friends are getting a little unsteady with stairs. That banister is there for a reason!
The garland is so easy to hold in place this way. Just wrap a piece of the garland around one of the ballasts.
You can still easily clean your stairs and still hold on to the handrail! And yes, my stairs are a little beat up looking : ). My house is just a few years shy of 100 years old and the stairs are on my list of projects! Honestly, I'm not sure how to refinish them. Does anyone have any advice? It would cost thousands to have professionals come in to do them!
Christmas Stair Garland - White twinkling lights and poinsettias.
I started by just wrapping some white lights around a spare piece of garland. I did like it but something seemed to be missing.
I added some poinsettias from my Christmas stash that I hoard in the basement. I downsized a couple of years ago and I really do need to downsize all those Christmas decorations!
The poinsettias make me think of my Mom. She's not with us anymore and every Christmas I pause and wish she was.
Poinsettias were her favorite Christmas decorations. The house was always full of live ones. But, I have a cat and he's a plant chewer so unfortunately, real poinsettias don't have a place in my home. But, these artificial ones give the splash of color I was looking for. And, are a Christmas nod to my Mom.
I mentioned my home is 100 years old. I plan on keeping the beautiful original wood in the original stain.
