Craving a sweet treat but short on time and ingredients? Look no further than these incredibly easy 3-Ingredient Banana Chocolate Muffins! This recipe utilizes the magic of a chocolate cake mix, transforming it with the natural sweetness and moisture of ripe bananas and eggs. In just minutes, you'll be whipping up a batch of delicious muffins perfect for breakfast on the go, after-school snacks, or a delightful anytime treat.

    3 ingredient chocolate banana muffins

It is the PERFECT recipe to use up those old bananas! The mashed bananas go so well with the chocolate, making this a flavorful muffin.

Another similar type of recipe is this three-ingredient apple spice muffins recipe. Or this three ingredient chocolate cherry muffin. If you are looking for some easy dessert ideas, take a look at my top 15 recipes using cake mix. I know you'll find a recipe you love in that post!

    Why I love this recipe!

You'll be pleasantly surprised at how good this tastes! It's so quick to make and is delicious.

This is also an inexpensive recipe since you only need three ingredients. You don't need to purchase a bunch of ingredients to make one recipe.

Bananas and chocolate go together! And it's nice to have a use for bananas that are a little over-ripe.

    Ingredients

labeled ingredients including chocolate cake mix, bananas and eggs
    Three-ingredient banana chocolate muffins.
    • Chocolate cake mix - stock up when cake mixes are on sale
    • 3 - 4 large, very ripe bananas. So nice that they don't go to waste!
    • A couple of eggs

    Substitutions

You can't go wrong with this recipe! If you don't have enough bananas, add an extra egg. With fewer eggs, the muffins will be a little more dense but still delicious!

Did you think you had chocolate cake mix at home, but you don't? That's OK! Use what you have, and I'm sure you'll love it.

    Instructions

    Step 1
Mash bananas.  Bananas that are a little overripe are best! I often make these muffins when my bananas don't get eaten as fast as I anticipated.

    Step 2
Add cake mix. Just the cake mix. Do NOT add the other ingredients that are listed on the box. I get asked this often.

    Step 3
Add eggs. I gently drop them into the mix and use a fork to beat them before incorporating them into the ingredients. Why dirty another dish?

    Step 4
Mix, then place the batter in a muffin tin. I use muffin/cupcake liners to keep my muffin tins clean. Let's avoid doing any extra dishes if we can.

    Helpful Hint

A huge tip that makes cleaning up a lot easier. I've started using scoops for a lot of my prep work.  For this recipe, I use a muffin dough sized scoop. It ensures each muffin gets the same amount of dough and doesn't dribble onto the pan (or the counter).  I also use them when I make my favorite meatballs and cookies!

    Step 5
Bake at 350 Fahrenheit for 16-18 minutes. It depends on how much batter is in each muffin well. And that depends on how much banana you use.

Fresh out of the oven. Oh, that chocolate and banana smell - so yummy!

    Storage

Muffins can be refrigerated for 4-5 days. They should be in a sealed container or wrapped.

These muffins freeze well. I recommend individually wrapping and eating within a month.

    FAQ

What if I don't have a chocolate cake mix?

A reader's comment shared she used a yellow cake mix and some cocoa!

    Any flavor-boosting ideas?

Yes, swirling a little peanut butter in the batter would be delicious! But then it's a four-ingredient recipe.

This was a great and easy recipe! The muffins turned out really well, and I wasn’t sure because the batter was so sticky. I added walnuts and chocolate chips.

These are fantastic! I have to confess I don't normally try any recipe that uses boxed mixes. But the picture of these muffins looked so good I decided to put my bias aside and try it. They are DELICIOUS, and my granddaughter loves them! I made them exactly to the recipe with the exception that I added a teaspoon of vanilla. I made them as mini-muffins, and they were perfectly baked in 11 minutes. I yielded two pans (48 mini muffins) from the recipe. I am so pleasantly surprised by this recipe that I will be trying the other varieties of cake-mix muffins. Thanks so much!

I used a golden cake mix, because that's what I had, and added about 1/4 cup cocoa powder, tad vanilla, tad chocolate flavoring, and 3 eggs because I only had 2 very ripe bananas. They came out beautifully, tasted great and were nice and puffy like the ones you buy in the store/bakery. Can't wait to try the chocolate cherry muffins

Yes you can. I would add a little water (try 1/4 cup) so the batter isn’t too dry.

I only had a yellow cake mix so I added Dutch cocoa to the mix and it came out relish.
      Thanks for the recipe.

Wow!! So easy and so delicious! I had three bananas to use up and came across this wonderful recipe. The only thing I did different was I added one tablespoon of oil to the batter. After putting in muffin liners I added some chocolate chips and walnuts to the top. These were so moist and good. I will definitely be making these again!!

There is sugar in the boxed cake mix. If your daughter is fructose intolerant, this may not be a good choice for her : (.

I wish I could post a picture! These came out perfectly, not too banana-y or chocolatey. Juat for the heck of it I used my silicone doughnut tray at 13 minutes. First Pinterest success (: thank you!
