Pizza sauce is the foundation of your pizza. Here is a quick and easy way to make a simple but delicious pizza sauce. All you need is the little can of tomato paste and some seasonings you most likely already have at home.

I'm finding I like to keep basics at home and, I've decided I don't need to stock pizza sauce when I can make some so quickly. The bonus is that it's so much more economical and you can tweak the recipe flavor to your own taste. I love making quick, small pizzas. This pepperoni Naan bread pizza is regularly in the meal rotation in my home. My kids loved these English muffin pizzas after school! A simple but delicious pizza sauce so readily available makes these meals a regular option.

    Why I love this

Making a quick pizza sauce adds to the convenience of making a simple but delicious meal. Who doesn't love a customizable pizza? Plus, if you make it at home, it's usually healthier.

The flavor of the sauce can be tailored to your taste. I like to taste my herbs and seasonings, so that's how I make my pizza sauce. You'll like this recipe!

Groceries have become expensive! But that little can of tomato paste is still a steal. There is a good chance you have the typical seasonings used for pizza sauce, so this is an economical recipe. Who doesn't like saving money?

    Ingredients

1 can (6 oz) of tomato paste - you can buy any brand, make sure it's pure tomatoes!

Water - we are going to dilute our sauce.

Dried basil. I've been drying basil the last few years - it's easy! Use either your own dried basil or grab some from your spice drawer.

Dried oregano. Purchased from the store or if you've dried oregano from the garden, that is a great option.

Onion powder adds great flavor. You can also substitute onion salt if you use garlic powder, not garlic salt.

Garlic salt adds my favorite flavors to this quick pizza sauce. You can certainly substitute garlic powder and add salt separately.

Cost-Saving Tip - This sauce saves you so much money because you aren't paying for a larger package of pizza sauce that is ½ or more water. Add your own water back in. That can is a much smaller container so it's cheaper to transport and store. I'd rather keep 2-3 of these small cans at home than a larger pizza sauce container with only one purpose.

    Step 3

Add your other pizza toppings and finish making your pizza. Below are a few ideas for you!

    Storage

Pizza sauce can be stored in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. It can also be stored in the freezer for up to 5 months. Make sure it is frozen in a freezer-safe container.
The sauce may appear a bit watery after sitting in the fridge or thawing. Just mix the sauce together before using.

    FAQs

How do I know what seasonings and how much I will like?

The recipe I've provided has a popular amount of seasonings. It's not to strong but still has lots of flavor. Have it and then decide if you'd like to customize it more the next time.

Can I use tomato sauce instead?

You can, but those are often too watery. If that's what you have on hand, I would recommend letting it simmer a few minutes to thicken before you use it.

    • ½ teaspoon onion powder

    Notes

This is a cost-saving recipe since you use a small and inexpensive can for the base of your pizza sauce.  If buying the ready-to-use sauce, you are paying for a larger container, which costs more to transport and store and takes up more room in your fridge.
