If you love simple fruit desserts, this dutch oven peach cobbler is an easy way to make a warm, comforting treat using a heavy cast iron pot right in your oven. The dutch oven creates golden edges and a rustic texture that feels different from a traditional baking dish version.

I love dump cake style fruit cobblers. My favorite flavors include this peach recipe we are now making, this easy apple dump cake and this blackberry dump cake with fresh blackberries.

    Dutch Oven Size Matters

Use a large 12 inch Dutch oven (about 7–9 quarts) or a baking dish with a surface area similar to a 9 x 13 pan. Smaller Dutch ovens are too deep and can cause excess liquid to collect at the bottom, creating a very thick cake layer instead of a soft cobbler topping. If you do not have a large Dutch oven, use my 9 x 13 baking dish peach cobbler version instead.

Dutch oven peach cobbler baked in a cast iron pot with golden cake mix topping and tender peach filling.

    Why I Love This Recipe

This dutch oven peach cobbler bakes evenly in cast iron, creating golden edges and a soft fruit filling that feels hearty and homemade.

Using a dutch oven gives the cobbler a rustic look and deeper flavor compared to glass or metal baking dishes.

The recipe uses simple ingredients and straightforward steps, making it ideal for beginner bakers searching for an easy dutch oven peach cobbler.

Even though this recipe is baked indoors, experienced campers often use similar dutch oven cobblers over a campfire, which makes this recipe versatile for different cooking styles.

The heavy pot holds heat well, which helps create a lightly crisp top while keeping the peaches tender underneath.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for dutch oven peach cobbler including canned peaches, yellow cake mix, and sliced butter on a kitchen counter.

Peach slices - canned peaches work well and keep this recipe simple. You can use fresh peeled peaches when in season, but drain canned peaches slightly so the cobbler does not become too wet.

Boxed yellow cake mix - this creates the cobbler topping and keeps the ingredient list short. White cake mix can be substituted if preferred.

Butter - sliced or cubed butter melts into the topping as it bakes, helping form the golden crust.

How to Make Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler

    Step 1
Preheat your oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a large dutch oven to prevent sticking.

    Step 2
Add the peaches to the bottom of the dutch oven and spread them into an even layer.

Cake mix layered over peaches in a cast iron dutch oven before baking peach cobbler.

    Step 3
Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the peaches without stirring. This layering helps create the cobbler texture.

    Step 4
Place slices of butter evenly across the top of the cake mix.

    Step 5
Cover the dutch oven with the lid and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the lid and continue baking for another 10 to 15 minutes until the top turns golden.

    Step 6
Allow the cobbler to rest for about 10 minutes before serving so the filling thickens slightly.

Tips for the Best Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler

Use a heavy cast iron dutch oven for best heat retention and even baking.

If your peaches release a lot of liquid, bake uncovered a few extra minutes to help the topping firm up.

Cut the butter into thin slices so it melts more evenly across the top.

Do not stir the layers once assembled. The topping forms naturally as it bakes.

Because Dutch ovens hold heat well, check the cobbler toward the end of baking to prevent over browning.

What Makes This Different from a Traditional Peach Cobbler

A dutch oven creates a slightly deeper bake compared to a glass or metal pan. The edges tend to be more golden, and the cobbler feels more rustic.

My original peach cobbler recipe uses a 9 x 13 baking dish and focuses on ultra simple layering. This version highlights the dutch oven cooking method, which many home cooks enjoy for its texture and presentation.

    Storage

Store leftover peach cobbler covered in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or warm the dutch oven in a low oven until heated through.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bake dutch oven peach cobbler in the oven instead of a campfire?

Yes. This recipe is designed for indoor oven baking. Many campers use similar recipes outdoors, but this version focuses on consistent results using a standard kitchen oven.

What size dutch oven works best?

A 5 to 7 quart dutch oven works well for this recipe. A smaller pot may cause the cobbler to bake unevenly.

    Can I use fresh peaches?

Yes. Peel and slice fresh peaches before adding them to the pot. You may want to add a little sugar if the peaches are not very sweet.

    Equipment

    • Large 12 inch Dutch oven for peach cobbler (about 7–9 quarts) or 9 x 13 baking dish. Using a smaller pot can change the texture of the topping.

    Ingredients

    • 1 large can sliced peaches
    • 1 stick butter ½ cup
    • 1 box yellow cake mix

    Instructions

    • Preheat your oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a large dutch oven to prevent sticking.
    • Add the peaches to the bottom of the dutch oven and spread them into an even layer.
    • Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the peaches without stirring. This layering helps create the cobbler texture.
    • Place slices of butter evenly across the top of the cake mix.
    • Cover the dutch oven with the lid and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the lid and continue baking for another 10 to 15 minutes until the top turns golden.
    • Allow the cobbler to rest for about 10 minutes before serving so the filling thickens slightly.

    Notes

This recipe works best in a wide Dutch oven about 12 inches across. Smaller pots are deeper, which traps liquid and can cause the cake mix to bake into a thick layer. A 9 x 13 baking dish has a similar surface area and is a great alternative.
Dutch ovens retain heat longer than baking dishes, so baking times may vary slightly depending on the thickness of your pot.
Bake covered first to help the peaches heat through, then uncover near the end to allow the topping to brown.
This recipe is oven tested but inspired by classic dutch oven cobbler methods that are also popular for outdoor cooking.
