Why I love this snack
Air frying kale chips results in a perfectly crispy texture with a hint of saltiness, making them an irresistible snack.
Compared to traditional fried chips, air fryer kale chips are a much healthier option with significantly fewer calories and fat.
You can easily customize the flavor of your kale chips by adding different seasonings like garlic powder, paprika, or nutritional yeast.
These chips cook in a matter of minutes, making them a perfect last-minute snack or healthy side dish.
When gardening friends give me a bunch of kale, I have a recipe I love using it in!
Ingredients
If you have kale, you probably have a little oil and salt in your pantry and are all set!
Fresh kale - I used about 7 stalks in a batch. It looks like tons but when it is air fried, it dehydrates and becomes a smaller amount.
Olive Oil - Use your favorite neutral oil and add just the lightest coating of oil to help crisp up the kale.
Kosher Salt - I like my snacks salty! Kosher salt is great in this recipe.
Onion Powder - adds another layer of flavor.
Instructions
Preheat air fryer to 350°F for about 3 - 5 minutes. Air fryers preheat quickly!
Step 1
Strip or cut the kale off the stems/ribs. Tear into smaller pieces. Try to have uniform-ish sized pieces for even cooking/
Step 2
In a bowl, add kale, and then add oil, salt, and onion powder. I use tongs to toss and rub the kale on the bottom of the bowl to get all the oil and seasonings.
Step 3
Add one layer of kale pieces to air fryer basket. The kale shrinks as it cooks so it creates enough space to have hot air circulate around it. Do not put more than one layer!
Step 4
Cook for 2 minutes. Some of the kale should start to brown at this point. Feel some pieces to see if they are crispy. In many cases, this 2 minutes is enough. If the kale does not feel crispy, add another minute but watch closely! It goes from crispy to burnt very quickly.
FAQs
The temperature on some air fryers may vary a bit. Also, if you have the door open on a toaster oven-style air fryer (or pull the basket out on a basket style), the temperature may be affected. The kale itself may have different amounts of moisture in it.
Literally stand by your air fryer - lol. I let mine air fry for 2 minutes, and they are often ready when I check at that point. If your kale isn't ready, air fry for another minute if they look very underdone, or 30 seconds if they look close.
Storage
I leave them on the counter and everyone steals a few every time they go by them. They are fine up to 2 days on the counter.
Don't make any ahead that you plan to store for longer than a day.
