This classic Muddy Buddies recipe (also known as Puppy Chow) is an easy no-bake snack made with Chex cereal, melted chocolate, peanut butter, butter, and powdered sugar. Ready in minutes and perfect for holidays, parties, or casual snacking.
9cupschex cerealOther options include Chocolate Chex cereal, Life Brand cereal and Crispix
1cupmilk chocolate chipsYou can also use semisweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips
½cupPeanut butterUse your favorite brand.
¼cupbutter
1 ½cupspowdered sugaraka confectioner's sugar
Instructions
Mix all 9 cups of cereal in a large bowl.
In a microwaveable bowl, put butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips. Microwave 30 seconds then stir. Microwave in additional 20 second increments until everything is melted and stirs together smoothly.
Add melted ingredients into large bowl containing cereal.
Stir until well combined. This is where it's much easier to get the cereal well coated if you get your hands in there (I wear thin disposable gloves)!
Add the powdered sugar onto the chocolate covered cereal.
Stir gently but quickly to evenly evenly coat.
Place on a parchment lined jelly roll (or cookie sheet) to cool.
Notes
Muddy Buddies are also known as Puppy Chow, and the recipe is the same regardless of the name. For best results, use plain Rice or Corn Chex cereal so the chocolate peanut butter coating sticks evenly. When melting the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter, heat just until smooth. Overheating can cause the mixture to thicken or separate, which makes muddy buddies harder to coat.If the muddy buddies feel sticky after adding the powdered sugar, let them cool for a few minutes, then gently toss again with a small additional sprinkle of powdered sugar. This Muddy Buddies recipe can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerated for longer storage. Make sure the cereal is fully cooled before storing to prevent moisture buildup.
