I am participating in a sponsored campaign hosted by Advil®. I received compensation for this post. All opinions stated are my own.
Have you ever envisioned a DIY project in your mind and just hoped it would turn out half as good as you envision it? Remember in my blog post Need More Mud Room/Closet Space?. I was showing you parts of my work in progress? Where I was extending my mudroom into my garage?
WOW! I’ve got to tell you that it actually turned out better than I had hoped. I like to go out into my garage and look at it. Yes, I can be weird. Ask my kids!
Who thought pool towels could be beautiful decor? Especially in my garage!
Here is what I did.
1. I found a long piece of baseboard trim that we had left over from when we finished our basement. I brought it to a big box hardware store and they were good enough to cut it into three equal pieces for me (my table saw wasn’t working that great). I really appreciated their help since I didn’t even buy the wood from there!
2. I spent a fair amount of time cleaning the wall area. Vacuuming the wall, ceiling and floor area. Patching, sanding and painting a huge rectangle grey. Paint from when I redid my dining room. Of course, I had to do more than my little area. I ended up with some sore muscles from all the work over my head. Working those muscles I didn’t know I had.
Advil® to the rescue!! No point in being sore for a couple of days when there is so much to do and summer to enjoy! Advil® relieved my aches and pains and helped me get through this tough project.
3. I painted the baseboards with a coat of primer. Then two coats of white trim paint that I had on hand. Did you notice that I had the more ornate side of the trim facing down for my shelf? It looked so much nicer!
4. I screwed the wood pieces onto the wall and attached the shelf with a two little “L:” braces attached behind the wood on the wall and attached to the top of the shelf (so you don’t see it) ***Disclaimer – needed my husband’s help because he is taller***
5. I was using my husband’s tools too much. He bought my my own power drill so I would stop using his!
6. When all the wood pieces and shelf were attached to the wall, I attached the hooks. To make that easier, drill a pilot hole with a small drill bit before you drill the screws in (thanks for the tip, hubby!).
7. Decorated with a wreath I had in the basement. Also put a few useful things on the right side. You know, things you need quick but can’t find in your garage. Pencils, scissors, Advil® for those headaches you are tolerating but decide a little relief would be nice!
Also put my cute citrus candles that I use on my deck on the shelf. Now I can find them when I want to use them! I also have two battery operated candles. When it gets later in the fall, I’ll turn on the timer and we’ll have the candles flickering by the garage doorway.
{sigh} I’m so happy this turned out. And, with back to school coming up, with cooler weather, this will be changed out for hoodies and sweatshirts! Love that I can use this year round and make my indoor mudroom less cluttered!
Let me share something really exciting and fun with you!! Do you have a DIY that you would love done but is just a little too much for you?
